1970’s sketchbook by artist Mary Harper This sketchbook was conserved as part of a group of six sketchbooks for Central Saint Martins College of Art in London. The sketchbook is by artist, Mary Harper; a textile and wallpaper designer who studied at the Central school (that became Central Saint Martins College of Art) in the 1940’s. The books are held in the archive and are used as teaching and research material. Their condition prior to conservation made handling very difficult. Tears in the cover were repaired and losses were reintegrated with a paper similar to the original cover and toned to match. If the cover remained unprepared, handling would have caused further deterioration and the repairs were designed to facilitate its use as an important teaching and research resource.

The stains were significantly reduced but not entirely removed. Further reduction would have required a more invasive treatment was deemed unnecessary to restore the aesthetic integrity of the drawing.
